Alternative Student Breaks
ASB Pre-Wildcat Welcome sends teams of incoming freshmen on service-learning trips across the country the week before new student orientation (Wildcat Welcome). ASB partners with established non-profit organizations across the Midwest to offer unique and fulfilling service-learning opportunities, giving students the chance to both contribute to and learn from the local community. (For a complete list of this year's sites, click here.) Students are accompanied by two trained site leaders who facilitate service-learning and act as a resource for incoming freshmen regarding all things NU. ASBers hit the ground running once they reach Northwestern and immediately become part of the ASB community, a group with a year-round presence and continued opportunities for involvement. This year's Pre-WW ASB trips will begin on Monday, September 4th and will end the morning of move-in day, Monday, September 12th.
Why ASB?
Starting college is one of the most exciting times in your life, but it can also be one of the most nerve-wracking. We believe that an ASB trip is the perfect transition from high school to college. You'll build lasting friendships with incoming students and have the opportunity step outside your comfort zone to learn about yourself, your peers, and an important social issue- and have an unforgettable week. Everyone has different reasons for loving ASB. Here are a few more:
- Have an entire week to ask questions and learn about life at NU before you even reach campus.
- Gain in-depth, experiential knowledge about a specific social or environmental issue. Teach newly-arrived refugees English, tutor hard-to reach kids, or help stage a get-out-the-vote effort, all while learning about the forces that lead to some of today's most enduring social problems.
- Make a real difference in the community you visit.
- Start college off the right way- with a road trip!
- Explore a new city for a week.
- Make friends with students on other ASB trips and get to know Chicago while exploring the city on the day before move-in.
- Get help moving into your dorm from your upperclassmen site leaders.
- Arrive on campus with an existing network of friends, including two upperclassmen site leaders who will act as a resource throughout your freshman year.
- Return to campus and enjoy membership in the ASB community, a group with a year-round presence and ongoing volunteer and leadership opportunities.
ASB Pre-Wildcat Welcome Mission Statement:
Pre-Wildcat Welcome Alternative Student Breaks (ASB) seeks to provide service-learning experiences for incoming students during week-long, student-organized trips. We hope to educate students about specific issues, thereby encouraging continued engagement in the community, both during college and after graduation. These trips provide students with the opportunity to learn more about life at Northwestern, and allow them to develop a network of friends before they arrive on campus.
